20170119 sjl water fest 2

Marcus Kern (left), 10, and Addie Caswell, 9, students at Ell-Saline Elementary School, watch a demonstration Wednesday morning of how water seeps through garbage and contaminates groundwater at the Gooey Garbage station of the Salina Water Festival. The demonstration shows what happens if the liner of a landfill is ruptured. Almost 600 fourth-grade students from Ell-Saline Elementary, Southeast of Saline Elementary, St. Mary’s Grade School and Salina schools attended the event at Camp Webster. The event is put on by the Lakewood Discovery Center, Saline County Farm Bureau, Central Kansas Extension, with funding from the Hansen Foundation.
